The Chemistry Book Club

What could be better than curling up with a glass of wine and a good book? We asked five members of our team to share their favorite read of 2021 to add to your TBR pile and what wine to enjoy them with.

My favorite book that I picked up recently was Invisible Life of Addie LaRue by V. E. Schwab. Vice President of Winemaking, Melissa Burr, suggested it to me! I enjoyed this book because it was a vibrant and unique story about the lengths you're willing to go, what you're willing to sacrifice for a different kind of life, and what matters in the end. The main character talked a lot about her experience with fine wine over the centuries, particularly champagne, and how divine it is. I would have a glass of champagne with the main character if I had the chance!

Under the Tuscan Sun by Frances Mayes. I saw the movie years ago, so why not read the book! I love the message of hope and that it's never too late for good things to happen later in life. I would drink Pinot Noir because it would complement the novel nicely.

Victor Panichkul, director of hospitality

My favorite book that I've read lately was Greenlights by Matthew McConaughey. Overall, this book was funny, well written, and included great life lessons. There are a lot of wines that I could pair with it, but I would choose the Pinot Gris.

Katie Santora, winemaker

This Is How You Lose The Time War by Amal El-Mahtar and Max Gladstone was referred to me by my partner, Aliya. It is one of her all-time favorite books! The conflict between nature and metal that eventually transformed into love through these two characters spoke to me. I'm a big romantic at heart, so I have a soft spot for love stories, especially when recommended by the one I love. I think of red wine when reading this book because you can savor each sip as you experience the two characters falling in love.

Stephanie Hofmann, marketing manager

Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens has been a total page-turner! This book is complex; it is not linearly telling the story. This novel keeps you guessing while pulling at your heartstrings along the way. I love a good ‘who-done-it’ mystery, but this is so much more than that! I can’t help but think of a good chardonnay while reading this book. It is rich, vibrant, and complex, much like this novel. It really is the perfect pairing.

Michelle Kaufmann, vice president of communications
